A Matched Pair

The first set was a match, that was over 22 years ago. Both pieces were olive green and seemed functional. The set was given to us when we first got married. We were thrilled. Well, I was, since I am the one in charge of laundry.

It went from there. Oh, if my washers and dryers could talk....

It didn't take long and the olive green, hand-me-down washer decided to quit working. It wasn't repairable. The dryer still worked, but we needed a washer. We really needed a washer, with the birth of our first child laundry was a daily task. Especially since I ventured to try cloth diapers (for a while!)

Funds were tight in our early marriage and a new washing machine wasn't in the budget. We found a great deal on a 1957 Norge machine...only $25! We definitely got our money's worth! That machine worked hard and you could tell by listening to it. It seemed to get louder with every load we did. The good thing was that our son got used to loud noise! It lasted about 6 months and one day it sounded as if it were going to get up and walk out of the house. When we removed it, the motor fell out of the bottom. The green dryer was still plugging away.

We got a new washing machine this time, nothing fancy, a bare bones model, but it worked great!

Next came the demise of the green dryer. It had several repairs during the time we had it. One day it decided that was it. Fortunately, I was home when it almost caught on fire. It was time for a new dryer. We bought one and got it in white to match the washer. A Whirlpool and a GE, but at least they were the same color.

About a year ago, the washing machine had had enough. It just wouldn't agitate. We had it worked on a few times, but decided that it was time. I completely lucked out and got a great deal on a beautiful front loader! It is the best machine ever...I can wash huge loads of jeans and they come out clean! With two teenagers in the house and a son who played football, a good washer made my life so much easier. That fancy front loader was a far cry from the 1957!

Well, this week the dryer decided it had enough. It started making noise and then just quit turning. We hauled it to the shop to see what could be done to revive it. The trail of ball bearings left on the shop floor let us know it was done. We got a new dryer today. Four days without doing laundry and it is stacked up pretty good.

The new dryer isn't fancy, but it is white and matches the washer in color. It is energy efficient and will get the job done.

We will be married 23 years this fall. We will be empty-nesters and the loads of laundry will decrease.  We still don't have a matched set! If I ever feel bad about that...I look at the washboard hanging on the laundry room wall...I really do have it pretty good!
