Loud, smelly, dirty and....FUN! The Destruction Derby at out local fair is a sell out attraction every year. What is it that has drawn so many spectators year after year?
Drivers work for months to take a car apart and rebuild it. I have seen some pretty decent cars become derby cars. Many hours are put into the building and painting of these cars. Some drivers go all out and detail their cars with precision. They end up to be some pretty neat cars.
It's almost sad to see a car get smashed in a matter of minutes after endless hours were spent preparing for this event.
Why do they do it? It costs money to buy a car, build a car, enter a car....and sometimes haul it home. There are a lot of entries and the chance of taking away any of the prize money is slim. So they cannot be doing it for the money. I think they do it for the pure fun...the chance to go out and run into another car and get cheered on while doing it. I think these drivers save up frustrations and release them in the derby. Whatever the reason, it looks like they are having a great time and some drivers are VERY into the whole derby circuit.
The biggest bummer is when someone works all summer on their car and it dies a few minutes into the event.
Spectators LOVE the Derby. The noise of the rumbling engines, the thrill of the crashes and the fun of cheering on the favorite keeps fairgoers coming back each year. We will be there tonight to cheer on some of our friends. It is sure to be a fun time.
