Earth Day is past...but the celebration will continue in a small rural community. The efforts of a community member and several local organizations and businesses will culminate the last Saturday of April with the "Spring Into Action" Earth Fair. If you live in the Inter-Mountain Community, be sure to check this out! If you live out of the area....well, maybe it's an idea for your community for next year.
The Fall River Resource Conservation
District is planning the first annual Earth Day Celebration at the
Inter-Mountain Fairgrounds. The event will be April 28 and will feature many
useful tools for the community. The day will wrap up Earth Week and activities
are scheduled from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Recycling, fact filled informational
mini-sessions, information booths and local vendors will all be providing
information and products related to earth conservation.
Coordinator, Kelly Shuler, said, “We live in an
area that is dependent on natural resources. We have a vested interest in
taking care of our land and resources.” This event will focus on showing the
community simple ways to make a difference.
One of the great features of the day will be the
short sessions on a variety of topics. Presentations facilitated by UC
Cooperative Extension, Shasta County Farm Advisor, Dan Marcum, will include a
presentation on a specified topic and allow time for questions and answers.
Information sheets and resources will also be available. Topics including
Drinking Water Safety, Solar and Alternative Energy, Noxious Weed Control,
Extending the Vegetable Growing Season, Irrigation and Dripline Water
Conservation, Gardening Tools, Organic Pest Control, Gopher and other Rodent
Control and Composting will all be featured.
The American Legion will have an aluminum
recyclying drop off point where you can donate your cans. All proceeds will go
to the Intermountain Flag Fund.
As a part of the week’s events, the Law Office of
Randall Harr and French’s Trucking will be accepting tires for a fee of $2
each. Drop off used tires between April 23 – 28. Additionally, there will be
free recycling bins for e-waste, paper, plastic and glass at the fairgrounds on
Saturday the 28th.
A yard sale, bake sale, book sale, gardening
supplies and crafts will all be available to the public. Trees and shrubs
ordered through the Resource Conservation District can be picked up also.
The event has been sponsored by the Fall River
RCD, Pit River Tribe, UC Cooperative Extension, Wayside Garden Club, Fall River
Valley Chamber of Commerce, Driscoll’s and the Lassen National Forest. For more
information or to view the schedule, see the RCD website at www.fallriverrcd.org.
